About the Process
Constellations was a barebones production within Playmakers’ Ground Floor series. We had a haunting, gorgeous script, two eager young professional actors, and a communal dedication to compelling authenticity- so we went to work. Our work on this play was instrumental to my understanding of breath, voice, and presence. We employed Alexander Technique and rooted every moment in life- in breath. Tia, the director, focused on creating an experience that lived in its own unpredictable way. Guided by Tia’s mentorship, my understanding of the technical, physical elements of voice and breath grew and evolved. I did hands-on work every day with Sarah and Brandon to access their continuous, active breath utilizing all three thirds of the torso. Their voices, their presence, and the experience of the show all depended on the continuation of Sarah and Brandon’s active breath for the full 90 minutes they were both on stage. The experience was beautiful- living and breathing.
